Household Items That Make Great Exercise Equipment

There is no reason to spend a fortune going to the gym or even outfitting your home gym.  You might be surprised to know that there are many items in your own house that you can use to get a great workout!

Don’t let the high cost of joining a gym or equipping your home gym deter you from getting in shape.  With a little resourcefulness you can get a great workout with everyday household items.

The following are a few of the things you likely have in your home that you can use to help you get a great workout.

Milk Jugs

A one gallon-sized jug of milk (but save your jugs and fill them with water) weighs about 8 pounds.  These 8 pound improvised dumbbells are perfect for getting a good arm workout. Try doing 2 or 3 reps of 10 bicep curls and a few sets of triceps curls, all the while holding one jug with each hand. Keep in mind that you can also hold one jug with both hands and do overhead presses.

Just like the milk jugs, you can fill a suitcase (or two) with heavy stuff and do a cardio step workout!

If you are fortunate enough to have a two-story house, you have a built-in stepper machine.  Go up and down the stairs many times… as if you don’t already!  To make an even more challenging workout, carry those milk jugs or suitcases up and down the stairs with you!

Believe it or not, a pair of Pantyhose can make a good makeshift resistance band!

Masking Tape

Put several long strips of masking tape straight across the floor for a makeshift balance beam.

A broom can be put over your shoulders and used to perform abdominal twists.

Your Body

You don’t need a single piece of gym equipment to get a great workout and stay fit.  Your body weight is the perfect tool for working out.  Push-ups, pull-up, sit-ups, squats, bend and thrusts… the types of exercises that can be done using nothing but your own body are practically limitless.

The Wall

You can use virtually any wall in your house to do standing push-ups.  This is especially helpful if you are just starting out and are unable to do many (or any) push-ups on the floor.  You can also lean with your back to the wall and slide down until you are in a seated position… holding this position for even 60 seconds can be a challenge… and a great exercise for your legs!

You can have an amazing, fit body without belonging to a gym or spending a ton of money on expensive exercise equipment.  As you can see, there are many common household items that can double as exercise equipment for fitness.
