Spring Clean Your Budget

It’s that time of the year when most of us start thinking about spring cleaning our home…  it’s the time to open up the windows, round up all of the dust bunnies and freshen things up.

While you are cleaning and organizing your closets, now is a great time to do the same with your monthly budget.  Here are a few tips to help you go through your budget and give your finances a well-deserved spring cleaning.

Clean Up Your Expenses

If you find yourself over-spending, look for ways to save money in your expenses. There could be some simple things such as turning lights and ceiling fans off or adjusting the thermostat to save a few extra dollars.  Keep in mind that every little bit really does help.

If you are one of the fortunate ones and find that you have more disposable income than you expected, be sure to pay down (or pay off) your debts or stash away more in savings.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Get rid of any of those small expenses that you really don’t need… cancel magazine subscriptions, that gym membership that you never use, on-line gaming subscription (this one was costing us $30 month).  Take a look at your cable package, are you watching all of the 5000 channels that you have in your package?  Set you bills up on automatic payment to avoid late fees.

Go Paperless

Nearly every creditor or service provider offers paperless statements, consider going to a paperless statement and get rid of the clutter and hassle of sorting and storing all of those statements.

Consolidate Accounts

Do you have multiple accounts or accounts that you don’t use?  Now is a good time to consolidate those accounts.

How’s Your Insurance?

Do you remember the last time you looked over your life or home owner’s insurance?  If it has been over a few years since you have review your insurance, now is a good time to take another look at it.  Do you have enough coverage?  Too much coverage?  If you have recently had a child you might want to up your life insurance.

Check Your Credit Score

Credit makes a big Impact on what things will cost you.  Everything from the cost of insurance, financing a car or even getting a cell phone.  You might be paying a high premium because of an issue on your credit report that you aren’t aware of.  You are entitled to a free credit check from each of the major credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and Transunion) once a year. Take advantage of that benefit.
