7 Life Lessons My 1-Year-Old Taught Me While Backpacking Abroad

When Life Looked Predictable

Fourteen months ago, my wife Courtney and I were heading toward a very traditional life. Courtney had just finished college, while I was seeing early success in small business and real estate. We had celebrated our first wedding anniversary and were excited about welcoming our first child. At the same time, we started searching for homes with wrap-around porches and white picket fences. Everything felt planned, safe, and familiar. Soon enough, we were only a minivan and a large mortgage away from what many people call happiness.

A Moment That Changed Everything

Childbirth has a way of shaking your world. Holding our daughter for the first time felt nothing short of miraculous. However, the weeks and months that followed completely changed our expectations. Slowly, we realized the life we were heading toward wasn’t one we had consciously chosen. Time suddenly felt limited, and conformity no longer appealed to us.

Because of this realization, we stopped and reassessed everything.

Choosing a Different Path

After many long conversations, we created a bold plan. Over the next year, we would eliminate consumer debt, sell nearly all of our belongings, and spend at least two years living abroad. While the decision felt scary, it also felt right.

So far, the plan has worked better than expected. We took control of our finances, reduced our possessions to just two backpacks, and began traveling through Australia and New Zealand. More importantly, this journey became a powerful learning experience for our fourteen-month-old daughter—and for us.

Learning Through Everyday Experiences

Children absorb information incredibly fast. Watching Milligan learn has been fascinating. You can almost see her mind connecting ideas in real time. Traveling, staying in hostels, riding buses, and exploring beaches all encourage this growth. Surprisingly, these same experiences have taught us just as much as they’ve taught her.

Pushing Limits Creates Fulfillment

Kids naturally test boundaries, and Milligan is no exception. She enjoys pushing limits and checking reactions. In the same way, selling our belongings and moving overseas forced us to challenge our own comfort zones. As a result, life has become more meaningful and fulfilling.

Adaptability Matters More Than Perfect Planning

We spent over a year planning our trip. We researched destinations, visas, budgets, and job options. Despite all that preparation, our original plans changed within three days of arriving. While planning helped reduce stress, our ability to adapt mattered far more. Watching our daughter adjust to long flights and small living spaces reminded us how powerful flexibility can be.

Learning by Watching Others

Milligan learns quickly by observing us. Whether she’s brushing her teeth or cleaning up after herself, she picks up new skills simply by watching. This same principle applies to adults. Learning through modeling remains one of the fastest ways to grow.

Expressing Emotions Freely

When Milligan feels happy, she shows it openly. When she’s tired or upset, she makes that clear too. She doesn’t worry about judgment or expectations. Over time, adults often suppress emotions, but watching her has reminded us that honest expression is healthy and freeing.

Patience Builds Strength

Before becoming parents, I believed fast action mattered more than patience. That belief changed quickly. Parenting teaches patience whether you want it or not. No amount of stress or control can replace calm, love, and understanding. Patience, I learned, is not weakness—it’s strength.

Imagination Over Possessions

Before selling everything, our daughter had countless toys and books. Now she has just a few items. Still, her imagination fills every gap. Everyday objects have become sources of joy and creativity. This experience taught us that imagination often matters more than material things.

Looking Ahead With Curiosity

This journey has reshaped our lives in ways we never expected. While settling into comfort would have been easy, we chose a different route. Instead of viewing our daughter as a limitation, she became our greatest teacher and source of motivation.

Although the future remains uncertain, one thing feels clear. Life’s most powerful lessons can come from the smallest teachers—and ours just happens to be one year old.
