INVESTING:

Take an X-Ray of Your Fund Portfolio

Understanding your investment mix is important. A well-balanced portfolio can reduce risk and improve long-term results. Fortunately, you can review your portfolio in just a few minutes.

What You Need

Before you start, gather a few basics.
You will need internet access, your mutual fund portfolio, and your latest fund statements. Having this information ready will save time.

How to Use Morningstar’s Instant X-Ray Tool

First, visit Morningstar.com and open the Instant X-Ray tool.
Next, enter each fund’s symbol in the first column. Then, add the dollar amount or percentage for each fund in the second column. Finally, click “Show Instant X-Ray.”

What the Results Show

After that, you will see a detailed breakdown of your portfolio. The tool shows how much you invest in different world regions. It also displays exposure to stock sectors such as energy and utilities. In addition, it explains your investment style, like large-cap growth or small-cap value.

You will also find helpful statistics. These include the average price-to-earnings ratio and the average expense ratio. As a result, you can clearly see how much you pay in annual fees.

Cost and Time Required

The basic service is free and easy to use. However, a deeper analysis requires a premium membership. This costs $179 per year, but Morningstar offers a 14-day free trial. Overall, reviewing a six-fund portfolio takes about eight minutes.
