How Cee Lo Green Taught Me to Achieve

I’ve got to make a confession. On November 9, 2010, my life changed. You see I was minding my own business, watching the Colbert Report, and saw Cee Lo Green pick up the microphone to finish the show by singing his hit single “Forget You” (aka “[expletive deleted] You”).

Since that day, that song has been playing in my head non-stop…for almost 6 months now. (By the way, if you haven’t heard it yet, open up YouTube and listen before reading further). Well wait, I’ll put it right here. If you’ve seen this, skip it and scroll passed the video.

Stop Waiting to Be “Good Enough” — Start From Where You Are

For six months, one song refused to leave my head.
I had two choices: ignore it or learn something from it.
I chose the second option — and surprisingly, Cee Lo Green taught me a lesson about achievement.

Why Waiting Feels Safe but Stops Progress

For a long time, I believed I needed to be “good enough” before taking real action.
So I prepared endlessly.
I planned, researched, and practiced — but rarely moved forward.

The problem was simple: “good enough” is a vague goal.
When goals are unclear, action gets delayed.
Preparation feels productive, but often it becomes a hiding place.

A Simple Lesson Hidden in a Song

In “Forget You,” Cee Lo tells a familiar story.
A guy falls for a girl.
She chooses someone richer.
Instead of waiting to become wealthy, he lets go and moves on.

That choice is powerful.
He doesn’t wait for better conditions.
He acts from where he is.

If he had waited for money, success, or status, nothing would have changed.
The song works because it reflects real life — not perfect timing.

The Trap Most of Us Fall Into

Many people want change, but few take action.
Why?
Because they are waiting for the “right” moment.

Common excuses sound like this:

  • I need a perfect outline before I write

  • I need the ideal workout plan before I start exercising

  • I need a flawless website before launching a business

  • I need the right time before leaving a job I hate

Waiting feels logical.
In reality, it keeps us stuck.

What Real Progress Actually Looks Like

Instead of asking, “Am I ready?”
Ask, “What can I do right now?”

Progress starts with imperfect action.
It starts before confidence appears.
It begins long before everything feels ready.

Cee Lo didn’t wait to become rich.
He accepted reality and moved forward.

Start Achieving From Where You Are

You don’t need a hit song to learn this lesson.
Pick one goal that matters to you today.
Forget everything you think you must do before starting.

Take one small step now.
Not tomorrow.
Not when conditions improve.
Now.

Perfection delays success.
Action creates it.

Forget being “good enough.”
Start from where you are.
